Winning The War on Hair Loss – How Two Doctors are Rescuing Hair with 21st Century “Hair Cloning”

AVENUE MAGAZINE – MARCH 2012

Dr. Hitzig and Dr. Prasad

Drs. Gary Hitzig and Amiya Prasad

You’re losing hair. Looking into the mirror and seeing the hair you once took for granted disappear can be devastating. More than 50% of men are affected by hair loss. It affects 30% of women and approximately 50% of women after the age of 50.

Drugs such as Rogaine, Propecia and treatments such as hair lasers and hair transplants are a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide. When it comes to hair, “greed is good.”

Numerous psychological studies have shown that a full head of hair makes you look younger, energetic, and even more trustworthy. Having hair is a sign of strength and power. Unfortunately, drugs like Rogaine work only on some men and have limited benefits for women. Women can’t take Propecia. Recent concerns about sexual side effects have limited use of Propecia.

Hair transplant surgery has come a long way but the procedure still carries the stigma of the “pluggy look”. Dr. Gary Hitzig, a hair specialist for over 35 years, has developed the first successful “hair cloning” procedure which he and his partner, Upper Eastside Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Amiya Prasad have named “Hair Rescue™.” Dr. Hitzig has developed a process using an FDA cleared material called “ACell” which activates your own adult stem cells. ACell is currently being used to help U.S. soldiers with major injuries and has even been shown to grow back an amputated finger- including the fingernail and the fingerprint!

Dr. Hitzig was the first hair specialist to investigate ACell after the FDA allowance for human use in 2008. Drs Hitzig and Prasad have developed systems of combining ACell with a concentrated part of the blood rich in growth factors called “platelet rich plasma” (PRP). This treatment uses the patients’ own platelets and combines them with the ACell, activating malfunctioning adult stem cells in areas of hair loss and rescuing thinning hair.

“In contrast to a surgical procedure, men and women with thinning hair can come in and have the treatment the way you do for Botox or Restylane”, comments Dr. Prasad. People have come for the treatment from all over the world from places such as Australia, Italy, India and New Zealand.

Acell Injection Therapy ResultsDoes it last? “At this point, we haven’t had to repeat a treatment for 2 years. We treat our clients on an individual basis and customize their treatments. Keeping your hair from thinning further is in itself a success. Call it a ‘vaccine’ against hair loss.” explains Dr. Hitzig.

As Dr. Prasad discusses, “In a world where we are living longer, working longer, having children at a later age and participating in online dating, looking your best is more important than ever. We have made a major advance in the battle against hair loss. At this point, the only thing you have to lose . . . is hair.”

What does it mean to be a woman losing hair?

So what does it mean to be a woman losing hair? It’s not supposed to happen, that’s certain. It may be easier for men. Not that it is less agonizing, but at least with men, we know it’s going to happen. we know that every decade about 10% of men join the ranks of those with hair loss. There is even a fashion statement for men: Bald is Beautiful. There are plenty of male celebrities (Patrick Stewart, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis), who are seen as sexy in their hairless state.  And yes, sometimes there are insensitive comedians who make bald jokes but they have become less frequent.

What happens when a woman is losing hair? It is hardly ever talked about. Women don’t bring it up with each other for fear of embarrassing the person who is losing their hair. Women generally want to help and make things better, so they may indirectly suggest alternative ways to style hair such as wearing short hair, hair extensions or even wigs.  So it is really difficult to bring up hair loss as a woman. I have noticed that whenever I go to a hair salon, the thinning hair at the top of my head and at my part is the 800 pound gorilla in the room. The hair stylist will determinedly re arrange some thin, sparse strands while we both pretend that she is actually achieving coverage in such a visible area of my head. And the bright lights overhead are reflected in the thinning areas of my scalp which can really make me squirm. It has gotten so that I am deathly afraid of spontaneous pictures where a bright glow on my head will draw attention to my bare scalp. And I think that having dark hair makes it worse because  the contrast with the scalp seems to be more obvious.

Female Before and After ACell/PRP injections

To be an Indian woman who is losing hair may be even a double blow. Sure, there are many Indian women all over the world who sport all kinds of hairstyles, including the really short Jamie Leigh Curtis look, but the truth is that the ideal is quite different. The Bollywood starlets tend to have long, thick, luxurious, shiny black hair that they can put up in myriad elegant up do’s to complement their high fashion, glamorous outfits.  Although this sounds incredibly stereotypical, I am going to risk offense by saying that Indians, much like those from other Eastern cultures, can be a little blunt when they meet you at someone’s house or at a noisy catering hall.  “Oh my god, what happened to you? You used to have such beautiful hair. Where did it all go?  Don’t worry, you are probably stressed and it will come back, just wait and see. My aunt (substitute sister, mother, husband’s aunt, cousin’s neighbor) had this  same problem and all her hair came back after about 6 months. I will get you some homemade (root oil, herbal oll, sandalwood soap, dry unidentifiable roots that you soak overnight, or freshly blended lentil paste) that I heard works perfectly. You just have to promise to put it in your hair 4 times a day. Religiously!!”

This is exactly the conversation that I have had to try to avoid on numerous occasions.

Not sure if this has been studied enough but it has been my observation that Indian women seem to have hair loss more often than those of other backgrounds. To add insult to injury, there is also a significant percentage of women that tend to have visible, coarse facial and body hair. That is just an injustice of Nature. To have not enough hair on your head and persistent, difficult to remove hair on your face and body can be quite exasperating.

For now, your only choice as an Indian woman with facial hair is to get laser hair removal  from a qualified specialist who has the kind of laser that is meant for darker skin so you don’t get burned. Or you could go with plucking, waxing or threading. As for the top of the head, I have been to so many  Indian parties where I have admired the hair styles of the ladies present, only to catch them re adjusting their clip on hair extensions  in a mirror as they walk by.

We are lucky to be living in an age where there is now a scientific, evidence based process that is available to anyone with hair loss, male or female.  And it really works. It involves a well- known substance called ACell  which has been used for decades on the battle front  and among vets for optimal wound healing. It is made from pig bladder tissue from an acellular matrix which heals by reactivating stem cells and leaves no scar. The world famous Dr. Gary Hitzig, who has been working in  and researching hair loss for over 30 years, seized upon the idea of trying ACell in the setting of hair loss. He combined the ACell with platelet rich plasma (PRP) to see if the living hair cells on the scalp could be cloned.  For more advanced cases, he combined the ACell treatment with hair transplants.

The results have been quite exciting. Within the first 6 months of the injections, Dr. Hitzig states that all of his patients have experienced significant hair growth that provides excellent coverage.

Indian women, like all women, now have a solution at their fingertips that can erase the embarrassment and give them the option of pursuing their own Bollywood starlet dreams.

What You Should Know About ACell Hair Restoration

NY Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Amiya Prasad and Hair Restoration Expert and ACell pioneer Dr. Gary Hitzig explain hair cloning technology ACell used for hair transplant surgery. They explain the protocols and methods developed by Dr. Hitzig for the proper administration during hair transplant. Dr. Prasad and Dr. Hitzig warn practitioners and customers of ACell that the material must be used properly for best results possible. Dr. Hitzig also introduces Hydr-ACell ,a new aqueous based solution developed by Hitzig and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Amiya Prasad. Hydr-ACell offers a more effective means to deliver topical ACell to wounds and transplanted follicular unit grafts. The unique application process allows doctors to evenly apply ACell to the open FUE wounds and protect FUE grafts in scar tissue. As part of this study, Hydr-ACell will also be studied for its topical value in healing.

Dr. Hitzig Brings ACell and New Hydr-ACell Solution to Norway Study

Gary Hitzig, M.D., a leading U.S. hair restoration researcher and surgeon unveils new topical ACell solution and compares effectiveness of ACell/PRP injections for hair loss compared to traditional FUE hair transplant in Oslo, Norway.

Gary Hitzig, M.D., a leading U.S. hair restoration specialist and pioneer of the ACell / platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections, was invited by the Poseidon Hair Clinic (sanctioned by the Norwegian government) in Oslo, Norway to participate in an international study on ACell Matristem and its ability to regenerate hair and improve wound healing. Dr. Hitzig, who practices at Prasad Cosmetic Surgery in New York City and Long Island, has been sought after by many researchers to expand on his groundbreaking ACell research.

In late August, Dr. Hitzig began an ACell study with the Poseidon Hair Clinic, an international hair restoration group with offices throughout Europe. The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of ACell/PRP injections for hair loss compared to the traditional follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant. Patients who received the ACell/PRP injections and patients who had an FUE hair transplant will be evaluated every three months for a year to determine differences in donor area hair re-growth, healing and hair duplication in the recipient areas.

As part of the study, Dr. Hitzig introduced Hydr-ACell, a new aqueous based solution developed by Hitzig and cosmetic surgeon Dr.

Dr. Hitzig’s trip to Norway was funded by the Scandinavian Clinics to help further the research needed to expand ACell use in Europe, which is currently only available in the United States. The study was supervised and regulated by the Norwegian Government’s medical board.

“The purpose of this study in Norway was to allow the doctors at the Poseidon Hair Clinic and the Norwegian medical board to personally see the results of using ACell/ PRP to regenerate hair,” said Dr. Hitzig. “I’ve been researching ACell as a wound healing and hair restoration application for several years and have seen impressive results that have gained a lot of attention from hair restoration specialists from around the world. It was a pleasure to bring this research to Norway and work with this group of talented doctors.”

Last spring, Dr. Hitzig also trained doctors at The Private Clinic, the largest U.K. cosmetic practice, in the use of ACell-PRP injections. This was the first medical practice outside of the U.S. to receive training in the use of ACell in hair restoration.

MatriStem MicroMatrix, a product of regenerative medicine innovator, ACell, Inc., is a wound healing powder that promotes healing and tissue growth. Dr. Hitzig has spent years researching and proving that when MatriStem MicroMatrix is combined with PRP, it can help to both prevent and regenerate hair in men and women experiencing genetic hair loss.

Hitzig discovered that if you dissolve the MatriStem powder in a specialized blood serum rich in the patient’s adult stem cells and inject it into the scalp, the combination acts like a hair growth accelerator. Many hair transplant patients experienced significant hair re-growth sooner and the wound where donor hair had been taken and transplanted was completely healed with little or no signs of a scarring.

Chemoattraction of Progenitor Cells by Remodeling Extracellular Matrix Scaffolds

Abstract:
The chemotactic properties of a biologic scaffold composed of extracellular matrix (ECM) and subjected to in vivo degradation and remodeling were evaluated in a mouse model of Achilles tendon reconstruction. Following a segmental resection of the Achilles tendon in both C57BL/6 and MRL/MpJ mice, the defect was repaired with either an ECM scaffold composed of urinary bladder matrix (UBM) or resected autologous tendon. The surgically repaired and the contralateral tendons were harvested at 3, 7, and 14 days following surgery from each animal. Chemotaxis of multipotential progenitor cells toward the harvested tissue was quantified using a fluorescent-based cell migration assay. Results showed greater migration of progenitor cells toward tendons repaired with UBM-ECM scaffold compared to both the tendons repaired with autologous tissue and the normal contralateral tendon in both the MRL/MpJ and C57BL/6 mice. The magnitude and temporal pattern of the chemotactic response differed between the two mouse strains. (Click here to view entire article.)

Comments by Dr. Hitzig, “This is an important paper demonstrating the Migration of Active Progenitor (Stem) Cells to the site of injury for repair when ACell (UBM) is used. This applies to many fields of study including of course Hair Transplantation. This is why we don’t need to use bone marrow aspiration. The Enhanced PRP provides enough VEGF (growth factor) along with adult stem cells to start the process as more Adult Stem Cells are attracted by ACell migration to the site.”

We are also working separately with several Veterinary Surgeons in a pilot study on several dogs with tendon and hip injuries to quickly demonstrate the positive results. The early results are exciting. Look forward to keeping you posted.
